Breast reconstruction is a type of reconstructive surgery that is performed after a woman has had to have a mastectomy or surgical removal of a breast. The vast majority of such cases are due to breast cancer, but other events or conditions may also lead to a woman considering this procedure.
When Should Someone Undergo Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction can be performed on the same day as the mastectomy, or it can be performed years later. The decision depends on the woman’s health and cancer treatments. If she is undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy, she will typically have to wait until she has completed those treatments before undergoing breast reconstruction. Of course, our skilled plastic surgeon can help you decide on the best time for breast reconstruction.
Types of Breast Reconstruction
A well-known technique involves using implants filled with saline or silicone gel. To make space for the implant, the surgeon will first have to put a tissue expander inside the patient to get the needed extra skin. When the patient has the desired amount of skin, the surgeon will remove the tissue expander and insert the implant.
In tissue flap procedures, the plastic surgeon uses tissue taken from the patient’s own body to create a breast-shaped mound. In most cases, the surgeon will use tissue taken from the patient’s abdomen or back. Sometimes, he will use tissue taken from the thighs or buttocks.
If the surgeon uses tissue from the patient’s abdomen, the procedure is sometimes called a TRAM flap. In a latissimus dorsi flap, the surgeon uses tissue from the patient’s back. In an SGAP flap, he uses tissue from the buttocks.
Nipple reconstruction is usually performed after the patient has undergone breast reconstruction. In most cases, the plastic surgeon will not reattach the original nipple unless he is positive it has no cancer. The surgeon thus replaces the nipple and areola. He will either use a prosthetic nipple or make a nipple with tissue left over from the breast reconstruction.
