Not many people realize that some men develop breasts and it’s not because they’re overweight. Gynecomastia is when men develop enlarged breasts.
It can be caused by obesity, but it’s also caused by hormonal changes, heredity or even after the use of some medications or drugs.
Regardless of the cause, it’s embarrassing to men, but the problem can be reversed with male breast reduction surgery.
What is Male Breast Reduction Surgery?
This surgery is similar to a woman’s breast reduction surgery, but it has a few differences. Patients are often put under anesthesia for their own comfort and safety. If the breast enlargement is due to excess fat, liposuction techniques may be used to get rid of it.
The fat tissue is loosened and then sucked out. An excision technique could be used when glandular breast tissue or extra skin needs to be removed.
Excision also reduces the size of the areola if necessary, and it allows for nipple repositioning when required.
Who is a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Men are considered good candidates for this surgery when other medical treatments aren’t correcting the condition.
In general, good candidates for a male breast reduction should be at a healthy weight, in good overall health and have stabilized breast development, meaning the tissue hasn’t grown for a certain period of time.
Recovery After the Procedure
Patients should expect to take a couple of weeks off of work and their regular activities to recover. Patients are sent home with bandages on the chest to minimize swelling and bruising.
Are Results Permanent?
Depending on the exact cause of the gynecomastia, results of the surgery are typically permanent. If it was caused by medications, those medications need to be discontinued to prevent it from returning.
If it was caused because of weight gain, the fatty tissue will stay gone as long as the patient maintains a healthy weight.
