Aging is a gift, but that doesn’t mean you have to deal with the sagging, wrinkles, and drooping that inevitably accompany it. If you’re looking for a change and you’re considering a facelift surgery, understanding the surgery will help you decide whether or not the procedure is right for you.
What Does a Facelift Fix?
A facelift isn’t the cure for everything related to aging, but it can fix a variety of issues.
- Deep creases along the nose and below the eyelids
- Sagging in the middle of the face
- Loss of facial volume, especially around the cheeks
- Loss of skin tone that results in jowls
- Excess fat under the chin
A facelift will never stop aging or change the natural appearance of your face.
What Happens During a Facelift?
A facelift is a fairly intense surgery, and you will have to go under general anesthesia. During a traditional facelift, the incision is made in the hairline at the temples, travels around the ears, and ends in your lower scalp. The surgeon may sculpt or redistribute fat from the face or neck. The muscles and deeper layers of the face are lifted, too. Once everything has been realigned or sculpted, the skin is redraped over your new contours.
The biggest risks involved in a facelift are typical to the risks of any surgery or anesthetic procedure. You may experience hair loss at the incision sites, or scarring.
Recovering from Your Facelift
When you wake up from your surgery, it’s likely there will be a bandage around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. You get to go home the same day of the procedure if there weren’t any complications, but you’ll be on bed rest for the next seven days or so recovering. The surgeon may prescribe medication to help you stay comfortable. It can take a few weeks to a month before you’re ready to go back to work or your regular activities.
