Sagging skin is caused by a lack of collagen and moisture throughout the dermal layers and beneath. As we age, our skin tends to lose some of its elasticity. This can be corrected by a partial or total facial lift procedure. Some individuals experience sags around the forehead, particularly in the brow area. Others develop folds in the chin as well as smile lines and wrinkles on the cheek or around the eyes. We recommend either a brow lift or a facelift procedure for our patients. During a consultation, we address the individual’s concerns and suggest the proper treatment type.
What Is A Brow Lift?
A brow lift procedure involves a simple incision made at or below the hairline on the forehead and extending to the ears. The skin is pulled upwards to correct the sag around the brows. Some brow lift techniques involve the insertion of a small tube into several small incisions on the forehead. A tiny camera is inside the tube, and the plastic surgeon views the video output to make additional cuts beneath the skin in the appropriate areas.
This type of surgery is an outpatient procedure and requires little downtime after the treatment is completed. In most cases, there are no visible scars because the incision is made adjacent to the hairline. When a camera is used for the endoscopic procedure, the incisions are quite tiny and will disappear over time.
Full Facial Lift Procedure
Excess fatty tissue sometimes causes wrinkles on the facial skin. This can be corrected by a complete facelift procedure. An incision is made just below the hairline and outward to the ears. The cut is then extended around the ears themselves. The skin is lifted up, and the fatty tissue is removed. The skin is then tightened and put back in place.
In some cases, tightening of the muscle tissue beneath the skin is necessary. The plastic surgeon will secure the skin to the tissue with sutures to achieve a smoother skin texture. A full facial tightening procedure has long-lasting results, and many patients report more elastic, youthful skin for as long as ten years after the treatment is completed. Both procedures – brow lift and facelift – take approximately one to two hours.
What Patients Can Expect
When we schedule a consultation with our patients at Hanemann Plastic Surgery, we give detailed information about how the incisions are made, why the incisions are made at specific locations on the face, and what the patient will experience during the procedure. During the consultation, we inspect the face and forehead closely, making notes on muscle mass and muscle tissue location. This allows us to customize a lift procedure that maximizes positive results.
Are You A Candidate For Brow Lift Or Facelift?
Depending on the amount of wrinkling on your face and the location of fine lines and folds, you may need only a brow lift treatment instead of a full facial lift procedure. If you are experiencing sagging of the skin and a loss of moisture in your upper dermal layers, you may be the perfect candidate for this type of surgery.
Apart from some light bruising and temporary swelling, this procedure is relatively painless. Side effects are rare and include slight bleeding at the incision sites, numbness in the facial skin for one or two days after the procedure is completed and minor loss of skin tissue in the areas around the incision points. We highly recommend this type of procedure for our patients who seek a long-term treatment option for aging skin on the face and forehead.
