Camouflage cosmetics can be used to conceal scars, skin problems and marks after surgery. Since most plastic surgeries involve making some type of incision, the scars resulting from the surgery can sometimes be visible. Camouflage cosmetics are used to hide such scars and are often used by patients after their procedures.
How Do Camouflage Cosmetics Work?
Camouflage cosmetics work in three main ways: by simply covering up the problem, using color correcting to minimize the appearance of discolorations and contouring.
Covering up something, or concealing is probably the most straightforward option. The patient uses a concealer to hide the imperfection. The concealer can also give the skin a smoother texture and a more even tone. There are multiple types of concealers available, and the patient should pick the one with the desired opacity and that best suits their skin type.
Regardless of type, a concealer needs to match the patient’s skin tone. The patient should dab the concealer on with their fingers rather than use a sponge. They should then move their fingers in a circular motion to make the concealer blend in with their skin. They should apply the concealer on and around the area where the mark or scar is. When they finish, there should be no visible marks anywhere.
What is Color Correcting?
Simply put, color correcting ultimately disguises discolorations in the skin by using products of different shades. It is possible to neutralize an undesirable color by covering it with its opposite shade. For example, somebody who wants to hide a yellow skin tone would use a lavender concealer.
A red scar can be hidden with a green concealer. Lighter and darker shades of concealer can create shadows and highlights, which can also help hide a defect. A concealer that is darker than the surrounding skin can make a raised scar seem less prominent while concealer that is lighter than the surrounding skin can make a depression appear smaller.
How Does Contouring Work?
Contouring is a great way to create facial definition through the illusion of highlights and shadows, thus minimizing the appearance of any post-surgery swelling or marks. It is often used after a rhinoplasty or another facial procedure.
Contouring creates dimensions on the face in a way that makes your face appear the way you want it to. You can change angles and even create the appearance of higher cheekbones with contouring.
