There are quite a few ways that a patient can slow the signs of aging, but at some point, everyone is going to have to deal with wrinkles, sagging skin, and excess pockets of fat. These aesthetic issues are especially prominent in areas such as the face and neck where no amount of exercise will tighten the skin. For patients dealing with these issues, one of the best options will be a procedure that involves both a facelift and neck lift for maximum results.
How Our Skin Ages
There are quite a few reasons that an individual’s skin will begin to sag around their neck and the lower half of their face. Many of the muscles around these areas will lose strength, and this means fewer contractions to keep the skin tight. An individual may also begin to develop pockets of fat around the front and sides of their neck that will contribute to folds and lines. The biggest contributor to these problems is the lack of elastin and collagen that the body produces as a patient becomes older.
Facelifts and Neck Lifts
A facelift is a general term that is used to describe a number of aesthetic procedures that are performed on the lower half of the face and chin. The primary goals of a facelift are to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, remove excess skin, and reshape a patient’s jaw line. This is achieved by surgically taking out the excess soft tissue, repositioning the remaining tissue, and then suturing the face.
A neck lift is performed on the area just below the chin and primarily focuses on excess folds of skin on a patient’s neck. This treatment is a great option for patients that have developed a “turkey neck” from folds of fat and skin that have bunched up. A facelift may slightly help with some of these issues, but a neck lift is required to reshape the neck completely.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Treatment
All patients will begin this process by meeting with Dr. Hanemann to get an idea of how the procedure will be carried out and what they can expect in terms of recovery. In the days leading up to the procedure, patients will be instructed to avoid over-the-counter painkillers, alcohol, and any other chemicals that will thin their blood.
The procedure itself generally lasts two to three hours depending on how much work is going to be carried out. Patients will need to have a friend or family member take them home after the doctor has confirmed they are stable. Those that do decide to carry out these procedures will need around two weeks to recover fully while the swelling goes down. Once the bruising has disappeared, the patient will be able to enjoy their youthful new appearance for 10 years or longer.
